What to look for? How do they structure their presentations? ( Answer to the focus question, key points, evidence)

TPOL Expectations (20 mins)

·         Read the expectations handout, the rubric, and the questions as a class – highlight as we go what you will need to remember

·         Write at least one question on the page

·         Q and A session with me about TPOL

Categories Brainstorm (10 mins)

·         Go over categories, give models of a few others  with the ‘as a’ as a generative prompt – as a brother, as a leader, as a maker, etc.

·         Students generate as many other categories as they can, write the best ones on the board

·         Students write their favorites on the assignment sheet to broaden the concepts they can work from

1.       Writing workshop critiques: Groups of 3

            Author: 1. Write a focus question and your name on both critique forms

                2.  Read the essay out loud

Critics: 1. While the author reads the paper annotate feedback and ideas onto the paper

                2. Read the paper again, silently, while you fill out the critique form

Refine your essay!! Add to your analysis! Why does this topic matter? Should we study it?

Your essay will be DUE tomorrow at break! (Printed)

If you have time start looking through your evidence gathering, look for specific evidence to bring up during the seminar.

Writing the paper – you will have time during the next two weeks to draft parts of your paper. You will use the Evidence Gathering and sources to generate your ideas. You may use Brave New World as well.

Write up the following answers in paragraph form. Be through in your answers.

Reaction:

Identify a comment made by someone else during the seminar. React to his/her statement. This could be a statement you thought was interesting, that you strongly agree or disagree with, that made you question, that you are still thinking about.

Self-evaluation:

In what area do you feel you did well in seminar? How do you feel you have grown since our last seminar? Use the “moves” in your answer.

Key Take-away:

What are the key ideas from the book or the seminar that you will take away? This should be something you will not forget, that has changed how you see the world. This could include something we learned while reading it or a new revelation about the world you live in.

If you miss class the Socratic seminar make-up is to write 4 TEA paragraphs answering the following questions.

1. What is overall message of BNW?
2. In what ways has Brave New World made you think about the concept of happiness?
3. What does John mean by saying nothing in civilization costs enough (page 239)?
4. How much of our society do you think is focused on comfort and how much do you think is focused on truth and beauty?    Give overall percentages and explain why.

Starter #9: (15mins)

With a partner dissect this quote by Huxley. Look up words you do not understand and write them down. Once you feel you understand the quote rewrite it in your own words in a way anyone could understand it.

“The lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging and kicking them into obedience.”

Once you finish re-writing the quote relate what it is saying to one example in the book.

Seminar Coaching:

Go through each chapter as a group and write down 5 key take aways from the chapter. Think about what Huxley wanted us to understand from the chapter and why he may have included it in this book. Look below the surface.

The Ending – Describe what happens at the end and what message you think Huxley is trying to send by ending the novel that way.  Come up with an alternate ending and explain how that would change the message sent. 

Seminar Questions – Generate 5 open ended questions that you could bring to the seminar.

If students finish early….

1. Have students review the rubric and highlight categories they struggle with. Write a list of things they could do to make sure they are successful in tomorrow’s seminar.
2. Review the book and sticky note any of the major themes – Stability, Identity, Happiness, and Community

Truth and beauty writing

Write a two paragraph essay on what truth and beauty means to you. The paragraphs MUST be in TEA paragraph form. You must include evidence, which could include personal stories, examples from the book or other books, or from other projects or classes. It must be typed!

Write one paragraph on truth and one paragraph on beauty. Use the book and Mustapha Monds perspectives from chapters 16-17 to help guide your thinking

Relate BNW to our world today. Find an image, either in a magazine or online, that shows how our world is like BNW. You may also draw an image if you can’t find one. You will need to print out the image and put it on a piece of paper.

1. Find an image that shows how our world is like BNW.
2. Put 4 quotes from BNW on the image that show how the book is the same
3. Include 3 of your own annotations on the image highlighting how our society is the same
